Adding Fika to your life

An important part of the cafe is embodying Fika, a Swedish word that means, “to slow down and appreciate the little things in life”. We interpret this as adding balance into your life and making sure that you take time to do things that make you feel genuinely happy throughout your day. Swedes generally have fika a few times a day which includes short coffee breaks, time to chat with friends, etc. We might need to learn a thing or two from Sweden considering they are ranked the 7th happiest country in the world. They are also the 11thmore productive country according to the OECD. Here are some ways that you can add Fika into your daily life:

1.     Take the time to spend quality time with the people you care the most about.
2.     Put your phone away. This will help you be present with the people around you.
3.     Practicing your favorite form of self-care.
4.     Get a good night of sleep. Sounds so simple but getting a good night of sleep can truly be a game changer for the next morning. Adults need around 7-9 hours of sleep for optimal health.
5.     Find a balance between work life and home life.
6.     Take breaks to help you recharge throughout the work day.
7.     Eat food that makes you feel good (and if that means stopping by Fika Cafe, we are all about it).

Not only does Fika help benefit your happiness, it can help increase your productivity and not burn out by the time you are done with work. The Swedish Institute calls it, “a social phenomenon”. Fika has been said to be a retreat from the stresses of the day with a real focus on bonding with the people around you. Don’t forget that it is just as important to take care of yourself as it is to bond with others for Fika! Taking time for yourself can help you enjoy those moments with others more and ultimately life full of more “fika” moments.
